The Dolomites are a mountain range in northeastern Italy, forming part of the Alps. The massif borders the valleys of several rivers: Izarko (to the northwest), Pusteria (to the north), Piave (to the east), Brenta (to the southwest) and Adige (to the west). The mountain range is about 150 km long. A couple of massifs have 3-thousanders, with Punta Penia being the highest peak /3343 m/.
Those 10 days offer us a head-spinning journey, a trip of unique ridges and lakes, via ferratas, trails, alpine meadows with surreal landscapes, fantastic gorges, waterfalls, accessible through via ferratas, crossing a glacier and glacial crevices, a visit to one of Messner's museums and wildlife experience - one of the most exciting adventures in life just 1200 km from home! :) Throughout the journey we are staying only in hotels!
Program:
Day 1
Departure at 6 a.m. from the National Palace of Culture (Vitosha Blvd.) to the capital of Croatia - Zagreb /a 10-hr drive/. Sightseeing in Zagreb, if time permits.
Day 2
6:00 a.m. – after breakfast we head off to Italy. We will pass through high mountain passes, offering magnificent views, impressive landscapes and colours! We are eager to reach the Dolomites to see one of Messner’s museums perched on top of a ridge with a stunning 360-degree view. We go up by a shuttle bus, but we hike down. Then a drive takes us to lakes Auronzo di Cadore and Misurina, where we spend the night.
Hike for the day: 2 hrs
Day 3
Drive and hike around the massif of Tre Cime, treating us to mind-blowing views! The Tre Cime are 3 impressive rock towers, around which we can take a panoramic walk in about 4 hours. Here instead of our traditional via ferrata at Torre di Toblin, we’ll do a new, more exciting one. This rush of adrenaline will open up new horizons in climbing and in life for us. Then we go back to our hotel.
Hike: 3 hrs (very easy) + via ferrata 4 hrs (moderately difficult)
Day 4
Early in the morning we head to a series of lakes that we have not offered so far. We will take a walk around the lake and visit other lakes on the way. Brimmed with beauty, we head to one of the top attractions in our new edition - a gorgeous trail by the river to take us to a canyon, a narrow gorge and with 2 via ferratas we will make a circle around 2 waterfalls. Transport to Cortina D'Ampezzo and our hotel.
Hike for the day: 6-7 hrs. (very easy) + via ferrata (from easy to moderately difficult): 2 hrs.
Day 5
We will go on a short round trek in the heart of the Dolomites, to be crowned with another new via ferrata, which will take us to the top with some of the most mesmerizing views for our trip! In the afternoon we go to a familiar place - Sass de Stria through a via ferrata. We will learn curious historical details about the First World War. We spend the night at a new hotel.
Hike for the day: 5 hrs. (very easy) + via ferrata (moderately difficult): a total of 3 hrs. The second ferrata can be replaced by an easier activity if you prefer to chill out and enjoy the magnificent panoramas!
Day 6
The day of the greatest and longest via ferrata of our journey!
After a quick breakfast, the minibus takes us to another massif and one of the landmark views in the Dolomites – Seceda! A cable car takes us to the plateau below Sass Rigais peak and after a short hike, we will reach the start of the via ferrata. After a moderately difficult ascent, we will wave the flag at 3025 m above sea level. This will be the most memorable and long ferrata (especially the descent) in our Dolomite journey. In the evening we go to our favorite hotel in the Dolomites to find well-deserved and long-awaited comfort! :) Those willing to take a day off may hike in the lower parts and check out a legendary view.
Hike (moderately difficult) + via ferrata (moderately difficult): 8-10 hrs.
Day 7
This day is dedicated to the Sela massif and its highest peak - Piz Boe! We take it easy to have a rest after the previous day’s exertion. But for ferrata enthusiasts we can offer another thrill in the afternoon (if there is time). Piz Boe is easy to reach, we take a cable car in both directions and marvel at breathtaking panoramas with Marmolada in full view.
Hike (easy): 3-4 hrs. Via ferrata (optional) - 3-4 hrs.
Day 8
Today we have two options – to climb the highest peak of the Dolomites, Punta Pena /3343m/, or to go to another new and splendid place in this year's programme!
Group I:
We get up for breakfast and then we head to a new massif and new unearthly spires, overlooking a lake and a lodge. The hike is rather easy, but the views are astonishing! Depending on our mood, it can take from 3 to 8 hours.
Group II (optional):
Today you have the opportunity to climb the highest peak of the Dolomites, but it is not easy. Over the past years, it has become more and more challenging to ascend Punta Pena due to the condition of the glacier and the lack of a cable car. That is why we will provide you with a local guide who will take you safely to the top. The pay for the local guide is not included in the total price and will be specified upon booking. To reach the top, we need to cross a glacier and do a via ferrata. A 10-hour trek if we walk fast enough.
Trek (challenging) + via ferrata (easy): Elevation gain/loss - +/-1300 m.
Day 9
It has been our dream for a while to take you to the Pelmo massif! In 2022 this dream is to come true! En route to Zagreb and Bulgaria we will spend some time to visit the panoramic peak below Monte Pelmo, which will be our gift to you - outstanding views and emotions as a farewell! :) In the afternoon we continue to the lowlands and Zagreb (6-7 hrs)
Hike for the day - 4-5 hrs. (with breaks and photos); Elevation gain/loss: +600m/-600m.
Day 10
Breakfast. Zagreb – Sofia drive (10 hrs)
