Night ascent of Kamenitsa in Pirin, with a hike to Tevno lake, a stay at the shelter and the greeting of the sunrise from the peak! A two-day trek in Pirin for lovers of offbeat adventure and mysticism!
Kamenitsa is one of the peaks on the bucket list of each self-respectful hiker. A night ascent of the peak is a daring dream for every adventurer! We have chosen full moon to get the feel of billions of stars in the night sky and hike even without headlamps on! Night-time hiking is much easier than hiking in broad daylight as we don't sweat, don't get tired or dehydrated! The reward though is priceless - the sunrise from the peak! :) We start at 7 a.m. at the Vassil Levski National Stadium, as usual. We are southbound to Sandanski. Our hike goes through the Bashliyski glacial valley. We have lunch in the valley and continue to the Tipitsite ridge. Once we reach the Tevno lake we go to be bed early to get up at 2 a.m. ... :)
Elevation gain/loss: up 1200m; down 150m. Total hike for the day: 6 hours
We may have difficulties getting up at 2 a.m. to get ready for the ascent. For half an hour we should be the starting line! We take the trail through the Kralev Drov pass and Malka Kamenitsa. The Milky Way is our companion and shows us the way! We are fast and manage to go up to one of the most majestic peaks in Bulgaria in 2.5 hrs. The sun appears above the horizon for its mind-blowing photo shoot! The emotion is beyond description - Pirin is waking up and coming back to life! After dawn we go down the Begovitsa river valley and before lunch we are at the Begovitsa lodge where we have snack and have a lie-down on the lawn. We go down to Popina Laka and as usual we are up for a mineral water pool as a finishing touch of our adventure! :)
Elevation gain/loss: up 400m; down 1500m. Total hike for the day: 7 hours
