Peru is a country that can satisfy absolutely all human tastes, preferences and energy! People there are very ground, humble and good – their mentality is pretty close to the majority of humankind. Chileans are pushy, more confident and more daring. Historically, Chileans with the military regime of Pinochet and the mentality of a strong nation on the battlefield, not coincidentally have the motto of the flag "By law or by force." They behave as they are a "great job", and others like it. :) You will figure out what culture and lifestyle of these two countries you will like more! One thing is common between Peru and Chile - unique nature and unparalleled world heritage!
In short, for 15 days (excluding the flights from and to Europe) we will face the culture and lifestyle of the Incas in Machu Picchu, one of the 7 wonders of the new world; the supreme mind of the tribe Nazca created mythical drawings in the desert visible only from the sky;the largest canyon on Earth (Colca) and the rambling condors in it; the driest desert in the world - Atacama; the highest-lying geysers on Earth (El Tatio);the Moon Valley, which fully justifies its name with the landscape resembling our satellite; the Death Valley, enormous lakes in the desert on nearly 5000m above the sea level; thermal springs and huge volcanoes, reserves and desert rock cathedrals; firm snow in the desert, exclusive fauna of South America - llamas , vicunas, flamingos, foxes, the condors mentioned above and many more!
Anyone dared to visit such a place must be ready to travel around 10-12 hours per day on a plane or bus (train), to hang on the terminals, sleep less, sometimes not having the opportunity to eat what you please, bear adversity… After all you will overcome all the inconvenience in order to see the wonders of the world that South America offers in surplus! You will normalize your regime as you get home and you will never regret your lifestyle during the journey – every moment of it will turn to a precious memory for you !!! :)
Flight from Sofia to Lima (usually with one transfer - Madrid, Paris, etc..) - Usually lasting up to 24h.
Arriving at Jorge Chavez airport in the Peruvian capital before noon. New flight (a domestic one - about 50min.) to Cuzco, the ancient capital of the Incas. From the plane below the view is great- we can see sharp edges and inaccessible six-thousanders. Once we reach Cusco we can already feel the unadulterated side of Peru and especially its character - Machu Picchu! In the afternoon we get a shuttle bus to the mythical town of Ollantaytambo in the sacral valley of the Incas. Our way passes a ridge of 4200 m, as a result of it we start feeling our pulse slightly more frequent, but it calms down after descending to 3,000 meters. Then we observe the first 6-thousanders! Ollantaytambo is the administrative and religious center since the time of the Incas. It is located in the valley of the Urubamba River, surrounded by majestic ridges of the Andes, where can be found remains of old cities from the Incas’ civilization. Accommodation and walking around town. Dinner at the restaurant and tasting local dishes. :)
Travel by train through the Sacral Valley to Machu Picchu (under the mythical city of the Incas). During the journey, we enjoy the views of the great peaks around, jungles and drinking coca tea! :)Hiking to the real part of the Lost City of the Incas (1.5 h). Walking and enjoying one of the greatest and true wonders of the world! Learning more about the history of a place, its life and culture. A man could really feel cool and obsessed by the magic and the colors of this place! This day worth’s a thousand lives! Built by the Incas in the 15th century at 2500m.a.s. Machu Picchu was declared in the list of World Heritage of UNESCO! Climbing mount Uyana Picchu, which is the symbol (known from all photos) of the main city of the Incas (1h). it is located at about 2800m.a.s., it offers spectacular views to the Andes and the sacred city of the Incas! Return by train to Ollantaytambo , walk around and buy souvenirs. Go to bedon time as in the morning we need to wake up earlier to go back to Cusco and Lima.
Early transfer (at 7 o'clock.) to Cuzco (1.5 h). A plane back to Lima (50 min.) In the afternoon transfer by bus (Cruz del Sur - the largest bus company in Peru) to Nazca (6,30ch-7h journey). Arrive late and accommodate at the hotel in Nazca.
Breakfast and transfer to the airport near the Nazca for a flight over the Lines! There we will catch a small airplane (pictured), which will be a real adventure! :) Drawings near Nazca are one of the most influential and mysterious wonders of the world !!! They are included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site! They were created by the Nazca tribe in 500 B.C.! It is believed that they have had the largest astronomical calendar of the world! Other theories connect them with religious rituals ... The truth is out there, but one thing is certain - this civilization was much advanced for its time and certainly its people were able to rise into the sky through a variety of aircrafts (in case we reject the alien intervention theory) as the pictures can be seen only from above (300-700m) and their making was coordinated from high!!! The length of some drawings is up to 270 meters. The lines present grooves with a width of 135 sm and a depth of 40-50 sm, which make the lines white on the background of the red desert colored by the iron oxide. After 3 days of seeing two of the greatest wonders in the world in a constant running and travelling, we get a well-deserved rest in the afternoon! We can walk around the town - the atmosphere and lifestyle are unique! Dinner and overnight.
Breakfast and transfer to Arequipa (9-10h by bus) Preparing dry food for the journey. Cruz del Sur will take care of us as well (they offer a sandwich and a drink in the ticket price :) Sightseeing of the second largest city in Peru, followed by hotel accommodation.
A two-day program including a visit to the Colca Canyon and Chiva and the flight of the condors! Departure from Arequipa at 8 in the morning by bus. We stop atbreathtaking sights and places to shoot some photos! Ancient churches and renovated bridges, typical regional llamas, alpacas, deers, foxes and vicugnas and a real Peruvian life and culture await us in our journey and stay in Chiva. Many emotions and sightseeing in the area; accommodation and dinner.
Early morning and a quick transfer to Colca Canyon, as condors fly away between 7 and 9:00! Colca Canyon is the deepest canyon on Earth! Two times deeper than the Grand Canyon in the US. With its depth of 4,160 meters, it amazes with its grandeur. We will see the typical terraces, where Peruvians cultivate their lands. In the afternoon we have a transfer to Arequipa and accommodation in the same hotel. :)
Interesting days follow in our journey –we will move to Chile in an unconventional way. We will take a bus to Tacna (the last biggerPeruvian town before the border with Chile) and from there we will be transferred to the border with a private transport as there are no direct buses. We will be transferred the same way from the Chilean border to Arica, the first big city in Chile! The whole journey takes 10-11 hours. Accommodation in a local hotel and overnight
Early departure by bus to Iquique and Calama through the Atacama Desert and the highway "Panamericana Sur" - the main artery of South America. The journey length is 9 hours. In the afternoon we transfer (1.5 h) to San Pedro de Atacama - the pearl of the Atacama Desert, one of the three most beautiful tourist sites in Chile (with Easter Island and Patagonia). San Pedro de Atacama and the area are located in the Cordillera de la Sal, desert mountain chain of the Andes, characterized by their lakes, from where comes the origin of the name. Night accommodation in a local hotel.
Our second day in Chile will be devoted to a tour around the salt lakes Miscanti and Miñique, Lagoons, Socaire Town, Salar de Atacama and Laguna Chaxas. The service will be provided by a local company for travel services. They will take us from the hotel in the morning, will provide transportation, tour guide, and food for the day. Duration of the trip is 10 hours. It is meaningless to describe the magic of the lakes in the Atacama Desert. Let the magic of Atacama and Chile capturesyou fully, make sure you charge your camera batteries, fuel with water and enjoy these alien landscapes and emotions! In the evening, we are in San Pedro where we chill out with local cuisine and beer! :)
It follows a busy day full of emotions. This time we need to get up at 4: 30 a.m! While still dark outside we take the 90 km. road to the geysers of El Tatio since their eruption is daily between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m. Again the same company will ensure the transportation, the tour guide and the food. El Tatio geysers are the highest geysers on Earth (near 4400m.n.v.). Many of us could experience breathing issues, but we can overcome them by taking plenty of fluids! :) We will enjoy a swimming pool with water temperature of 300C, at normal air temperatures around 0! In the afternoon we return to San Pedro and chill out. In the evening there is another surprise - a walk to the nearby Moon Valley! Moon Valley is just a copy of the original surface of the moon and the landscape is completely natural with typical sand dunes, salt fields and rocky landscapes! After our trip to the moon, we go home to celebrate this wonderful day! :)
The culmination lies ahead us! This day we will head to the lake "Tara" and reserve "Los Flamengos"! Along the way we will pass volcanoes, lakes at 4900m.a.s., We will cross the largest crater in the world - Pacal. Lake Tara is the most gorgeous throughout the Cordillera de la Sal, and on the way to it will see stunning rock cathedrals, "The Indian" - an impressive rock formation, firm snow on 5000m and a bunch of other surprises only a few kilometers from the triple border with Bolivia and Argentina !!!The tour company will provide us a nice meal at 4400m.a.s.l. on the banks of the Princess of the Andes - Tara. In the afternoon in a great mood we go back to San Pedro where we relax and enjoy the tour around the desert town. There are many attractions- we can choose to hire bicycles and enjoy the sunset in the desert! :)
Our journey comes to an end. We have an early departure back to Arica, in the evening we relax at the same hotel where we stayed when coming.
We get transferred by a private transport across the border to Tacna, and from there to Arequipa. In Arequipa we can sleep better and get prepared for the last portion of a long bus ride to Lima.
At lunch (or early afternoon) we catch thebus to Lima and travel almost… 16 hours with it! Early in the morning we arrive in Lima where we have a full day available for sightseeings.
Days 17 and 18
Lima is a big city, the third largest city in the Southern hemisphere! At first glance it looks pretty messy, poor and dirty, but the city center is impressive! In the evening we go to the airport to catch a flight overseas. I was wondering what to write about the end of the trip of our life when I realized that actually this was the beginning of something new, something incomparable and unique...
